Fascia, soffit and guttering replacement for Mapperley's Victorian homes, interwar semis, post-war properties and modern developments.
Mapperley sits on top of the city for a reason.
Mapperley sits on a ridge at a little over 400 feet above sea level, making it one of Nottingham's highest areas.
Anyone who's worked outside around Mapperley in January probably didn't need a history book to tell them it's high up.
Fascias, soffits and guttering sit right at the exposed edge of a roof. That's why we treat the roofline as part of the building, not simply as a decorative strip of plastic around it.
There's no such thing as a standard Mapperley roofline.
Mapperley didn't appear as one enormous housing estate. It developed over generations, and its streets tell that story.
Older cottages and Victorian-era properties sit alongside early 20th-century homes, interwar housing, post-war development and considerably newer properties.
For fascia fitters, that matters. The roofline on an older house can be completely different from the property around the corner, and previous repairs or replacement work can matter just as much as the original age of the building.
Mapperley has been changing for centuries.
Long before the streets of houses we know today, Mapperley was high ground outside the expanding town of Nottingham. Clay, brickmaking, transport and eventually housebuilding transformed it.
An old Nottingham name
Historical records refer to Mapurley Barns by the late 15th century, when this was still a sparsely developed area high above Nottingham.
Clay beneath Mapperley
Clay digging and brickmaking in the Mapperley area can be traced back centuries, long before the large industrial brickworks arrived.
Brickmaking transforms the area
Nottingham's rapid expansion increased demand for bricks. During the 1860s large-scale mechanised brick production developed in Mapperley.
Porchester Freehold Garden Estate
Land around Woodborough Road and Porchester Road began developing into the Porchester Freehold Garden Estate, eventually covering around 130 acres.
Gardens become streets of homes
Housing increasingly appeared on the former garden plots after the First World War. By 1925 around 400 houses had been built.
The Mapperley we work in
Generations of development have left Mapperley with a varied housing stock — and plenty of different rooflines for us to work on.
Things you might not know about Mapperley.
One of Nottingham's highest areas
Mapperley's position on a ridge puts the main part of the area at a little over 400 feet above sea level.
Garden plots
The Porchester Freehold Garden Estate eventually contained 832 plots, allocated by ballot after roads and mains water were installed.
Homes by 1925
After the First World War, houses increasingly appeared on those plots. By 1925 around 400 homes had been built.
The end of an industry
Brickmaking continued in Mapperley until 1969, ending an industry that had shaped the area for centuries.
Mapperley helped build St Pancras.
Here's one worth remembering: Nottingham City Council records that Mapperley's brickworks supplied around 10 million of the roughly 60 million bricks used to construct St Pancras Station. Before Mapperley became the residential area we know today, its clay was helping build Victorian Britain.
So what does any of that have to do with your fascias?
More than a century of housebuilding means we're working on properties constructed in very different periods.
We don't assume every Mapperley home needs the same solution. We look at the roofline that's actually in front of us.
Older timber fascias
Once protective coatings fail, moisture can reach the timber and deterioration can begin.
Previous over-cladding
New-looking uPVC doesn't automatically tell you what's behind it. Existing timber and previous work need to be considered.
Guttering problems
Leaking joints, overflowing gutters and water getting where it shouldn't can contribute to deterioration around a roofline.
Modern uPVC replacement
Properly installed uPVC fascias and soffits give the property a clean, low-maintenance roofline without regular repainting.
Mapperley isn't exactly a long commute for us.
We're based around the Carlton side of Nottingham and regularly work throughout Mapperley and the surrounding areas.
In fact, we've got an even more direct connection to Mapperley.
It's where our apprentice lives.
So unfortunately for him, “you had too far to come and pick me up” isn't going to work as an excuse for being late. Carlton to Mapperley isn't exactly Land's End to John o' Groats.
Joking aside, being genuinely local matters to us. These aren't location names added to a website simply because Google likes them. They're the areas we live around, travel through and work in.
