A village with a much bigger story.
Gedling goes back much further than the streets and estates we know today. Its history stretches from an early settlement and medieval village through the railway and mining years, before becoming part of the Nottingham suburban area we recognise now.
Gedling in Domesday
Gedling appears in the Domesday record, with farming, meadow, woodland, mills and a church all forming part of the early settlement.
The old village
The historic heart of Gedling developed around All Hallows Church. Parts of the church date back to around the end of the 12th century.
The railway arrives
The Great Northern Railway helped change the area. Agricultural cottages became railway workers' homes and more housing followed.
Gedling Colliery
The opening of Gedling Colliery changed the community again, bringing employment, families and further housing to the area.
The pit didn't just provide work. It helped shape Gedling.
Gedling Colliery opened in 1902 and became one of the area's major employers. At its peak in the 1920s, thousands of people worked at the pit, and the growth that came with it left a permanent mark on Gedling.
Housing followed that growth. The Phoenix Farm development is particularly tied to Gedling's colliery history, while the wider area contains the sort of solid older housing that still makes up a large part of the local streets today.
Those homes have changed over the years too. Old timber rooflines have been repaired, covered or replaced, guttering systems have changed and modern uPVC fascias and soffits have become part of keeping these properties protected.
